Before I gave birth to a girl, I swore up and down that no daughter of mine would ever don the color pink. She’d never go near a tutu. I swore that I wouldn’t even allow her to have her hair in pigtails. I now eat my own words.
Because, at just 14 months old (and truthfully, even before then), V (my girl) would express to me how much she loved sequins, sparkles and jewels. Ok, maybe it was all in my head, but she DID seem to sort of glow when she was all girly-ed up.
The thing is, that’s not my style. It never has been. For her sake, I am learning, or trying to learn, my way around a girl’s “must haves.” The most ironic thing that I have learned about styling my daughter is that it’s ok to mix styles! Actually, that’s when her photos get the most attention.
Ok, so why am I getting into this tonight? What’s got me going on this rant?
Well, it’s a flower crown/headband.
That’s just one accessory that I have been totally afraid of. I always thought, “well, this is just too far gone for me to make it happen with her current wardrobe. Yes, she’s got a mix of street, casual, classic and girly pieces…..but a flower crown? Where do I begin?”
When V’s first crown arrived from Crowned Joy (www.crownedjoy.myshopify.com), my reaction was, “I need to work with these colors. They’re so vibrant. I need to enhance them somehow.” I immediately noticed the care that Amy, Founder and CEO of Crowned Joy, took in glueing, folding and creating this crown into being, and I just had to respect that. My daughter noticed, too. She lunged right for the crown, straight out of the box. What’s not to love about felt flowers and an alicorn (in case you don’t know, that’s apparently the name for the horn of a unicorn)?
So, in styling this session, I let the colorful palatte inspire me.
Certain colors talk to me, and they pair so nicely together. For instance, one of my ABSOLUTE favorite combos is purple and green. And, so, this outfit was!
TIP: I always find it helpful to take one item, an accessory (like this awesome crown), a leotard, a tutu, and let that item drive the pairings. That item takes the style lead, and, usually, a killer outfit follows!
What are your favorite color pairings?
